How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A drip irrigation system can take the guesswork out of watering your container plants. With the proper set up and maintenance, a drip system can water your plants just the right amount and save you time and hassle. Using these tips, you can avoid common mistakes and water no more or less than needed.
Install Irrigation Drippers

Center the dripper head in each pot, just to one side of where you plan to insert your plants (the dripper`s spike is sharp, so it`s easy to insert into the soil). Fill your containers with soil—making sure you bury the tubing under the soil. Then add your plants and enjoy.

To water your containers, start by running the system until water just starts to seep from the bottom of the containers. Note how long this takes (probably between 5 and 15 minutes): That will be your watering duration. Now set the timer to run twice a day.
As a homeowner, you can use drip irrigation in your vegetable and perennial gardens, and to water trees and shrubs. Drip irrigation involves placing tubing with emitters on the ground along side the plants. The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root zone.
Drip irrigation is suited to irrigating individual plants or trees or row crops such as vegetables and sugarcane. It is not suitable for close growing crops (e.g. rice).
Because it can be expensive to install and operate, farmers have to determine that increased crop yield and better quality will result in enough of an increase in income to offset the cost of installing and operating an irrigation system.
Subsurface (drip) irrigation might be what you`re looking for. Let`s get this straight; subsurface irrigation is a form of drip irrigation only buried in the ground. It mimics an irrigation process used in Ag which was adopted by the homeowner for planter beds.
Here`s how we recommend you run drip irrigation systems during each season: Summer: 2 to 3 days a week. Spring and fall: Once or twice a week. Winter: Once a week or every other week.
Use one 1/2-gallon-per-hour (gph) emitter for a pot up to 10 inches wide and two 1/2-gph emitters on a T-fitting for medium-size pots up to 15 inches wide. For larger containers, make a ring of emitters—four 1/2-gph for a 16-inch-wide pot, more emitters and a bigger circle as pot size increases.
Although hand watering helps conserve water, it is not the most efficient method. Drip-irrigation systems are more efficient because the water is delivered drop by drop over a long period of time, and this provides plant roots time to absorb waterborne nutrients gradually and continuously.
Drip Irrigation tubing can be buried underground and/or covered by mulch. Keep in mind that burrowing rodents, like gophers, can chew through the tubing seeking water, and with it being underground, it is harder to locate the leak.
Most drip tape systems put out ¼ gallon per hour at each emitter. Drip line systems can put out ½ gallon or 1 gallon per emitter or sometimes more depending on what you are watering.

Garden Pots cannot be watered with sprinklers. As a result, players must water crops in Garden Pots on a daily basis with a Watering Can, or less often if they use a type of Retaining Soil.

I have installed a Hunter psr22 pump start relay and connected it to a Hunter src irrigation controller and when I cycle the irrigation controller to manual all stations it will not start the pump. There is pump power in to and out of the relay. The pump will start when relay operated manually. There are only two wires from the relay that have been landed on the controller terminals mv and c.
ANSWER : So the mv and c are supplying power to the transformer/relay and out of it, but the pump won’t start until the relay is forced.
I’m thinking the relay contacts are oxidized, and need to be cleaned. When they have oxidation, current goes up, and voltage might appear ok. If any start capacitors are in the circuit, they can be faulty, breaking down under a load, while reading ok. I haven’t heard of any caps in these systems, but just in case.
The following blog may help you- it’s about different controller situations:

It has lost it's prime – Sta Rite Ds3hf 1.50 Hp Self Priming Irrigation Pump
ANSWER : Without more info it’s hard to say. This could be something as simple as a dirty lid “o” ring, if it is streched out or cracked you will need a new one. If not you can clean with dish soap then when you relube “o” ring use teflon or silicone grease then wipe excess off as this excess will collect dirt, also clean lip of pump pot also. If this is not the problem then you may need to replumb pump or replace seal. When you loose prime if the pump runs for any lenigth of time the water left in pot will overheat and cause plumbing to warp or seal falure.
