How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
If the spring is set in the wrong position it can cause the engine RPMs to surge. Over time the spring can stretch out, causing the same engine surging. Often surging caused by the governor can be fixed by simply adjusting the governor spring. It usually only takes a small adjustment to correct the surging.
Most often, over-revving occurs not because of a deliberate attempt to push a vehicle, but rather as a result of missing a gear while shifting. When a manual car accidentally downshifts, a rev limiter will not be able to react quickly enough to prevent the engine from over-revving.
A malfunction in the throttle body can cause uneven fuel supply, resulting in surging. Malfunctioning fuel injectors: Inadequate fuel supply through fuel injectors could lead to surging. Vacuum leaks: Vacuum leaks can cause a fluid mixture, which can result in surging.
The problem may involve an annoying change (up/down) of engine speed while cruising at a steady pace, a low drop (or even cut-out) at idle or when approaching a stop, a wild high engine speed of several thousand rpm followed by a drop to near zero, etc.
Surging and Lagging

Another good indication that your spark plugs are dirty or worn is if your vehicle experiences surges of speed, resulting in a jerking acceleration. These surges occur because your spark plugs are not igniting the fuel in your engine at the proper rate, resulting in an uneven speed.

Spark Plug Bad

Another common problem that results in your lawn mower surging is a bad spark plug. A bad spark plug produces an irregular spark. The spark that should be consistent works on and off, which results in bursts of combustion that make your lawn mower surge.

Among the potential underlying causes are vacuum leaks, EGR system malfunctions, malfunctioning oxygen sensors, dirty fuel injectors, fuel pump malfunction, faulty spark plugs, a faulty mass airflow sensor, or a faulty throttle position sensor.
The mower surges when the carburetor sucks air through an unsealed gap in the air intake manifold instead of through the air filter. Dirty carburetor. Clogged fuel jets inside the carburetor commonly cause the lawn mower engine to surge. Clogged jets can`t provide the right mix of air and fuel to the engine.

2010 model 20 hp Briggs motor. Fuel going through fuel line, but not going into carberator. Motor runs good for about 15 min, but after heating up this fuel problem starts. After cooling down for an hour it will run again for about 15 min.\r\nThanks for any advice
Tom in AR
ANSWER : Two things:
1 Is fuel coming out of the fuel line. Older mowers have old fuel lines and they tend to get weak and collapse went they warm up with engine heat. Replace the old fuel line.
2 deposits in the carb. take off the air cleaner, start it up and spray a good carb cleaner in the carb until the engine dies. Put some ‘seafoam’ in the gas and a little in the oil and put the air cleaner back on and start the mower and mow on FULL THROTTLE. this should claen out the carb. Yes the mower will run rough for awhile.

these two cheap fixes will solve 85 % of carb problems. GOOD LUCK

Have 24 hp kaw. engine on Cub lawn mower. At idle, engine is erratic, revs, then slows, revs, then slows.
ANSWER : Hello. The usual cause of carb “hunting”, is a weak governer spring. Although it might look fine it may not be and I would replace it. Another possible cause is a float problem. Finally it could also be the fuel filter or a chunk of debris in the carburator.
