Carbon brushes are available in four main grade categories: carbon graphite, electrographitic, graphite, and metal graphite. Material types are matched to the demands of the motor or generator as well as the operational environment.
While not all carbon brushes look the same or are accessed in the same ways, this explanation should assist you no matter what DC motor you`re working with. A carbon brush, also known as a motor brush, is the small part of the motor that conducts electrical current between the stationary wires (stator) and the rotating wires (rotor) of a motor or generator.
If the brush displays signs of breakage, crumbling or burning then it should be replaced. If there is any change in colour to the spring (such as rainbow patterns), this could indicate that there is a broken lead in the spring, and so should be replaced.
Brush sizes are designated as: Thickness x Width x Length of the carbon. If the brush design includes a Red Top, the length measurement should include the pad. On brushes with bevels, the length is measured on the long side. Brushes with a head on top include length of head.
To work out the required brush size, it`s worth noting that they are typically about two to three tenths the size of the metal holder that contains them (or the brush holder). If your carbon brushes are too big, you can reshape the graphite fairly easily using sandpaper.
A carbon brush is a really just a small square of carbon that is used to carry a current through your electric motor. Without a carbon brush, the electric motor wouldn`t work.
AC induction motors and BLDC motors do not depend upon the mechanical system (brushes) to control current. The AC and BLDC motors pass current through the stator (electromagnet) which is connected to AC power directly or via a solid-state circuit.
A correctly fitted brush has the curved end of the brush trailing against the commutator (the copper segments). If fitted the wrong way round then only the tip of the brush trails against the commutator instead. This would cause a loud ratchety sound and excessive sparking or lack of power.
Electrographite grades have the best performance among carbon brushes, that is, they have the best commutating characteristics and the lowest friction coefficients. Generally, “carbon brushes” means electrographite grade brushes.
Brushes in an electric motor are mainly used to transfer power between the rotating armature coils and stationary wires to the rotor. It also helps to make a contact with the rotating rings so that current can be supplied to the coil.
Brushed motor life is limited by the brush type and can attain 1,000 to 3,000 hours on average, while brushless motors can attain tens of thousands of hours on average, as there are no brushes to wear. The limiting factor is the wear on the bearings.
There are five main types of artist brushes: flat brushes, bright brushes, round brushes, Filbert brushes, and sable brushes.
They can either be graphite or precious metal brushes which have electrical motor connections. To supply power to the rotor we put in place a brush system and each of the brushes have a direct voltage symbol (+/-).

I have an earthwise 12 amp electric lawnmower that trip the circuit breaker and now will not start at all. Any suggestions on what might be wrong and how I could fix it
ANSWER : If the circuit breaker trips there are three possible reasons 1. the motor is being overloaded – clean underneath ( as recommended above); or if the grass is too wet or too long or both you may need to handcut; or the motor bearings need lubricating (same problem as me-how?)2. There is an electrical fault – check the plug and cord (as above) or get an electrician to check the motor and connections; or the carbon brushes to the motor need replacing3. You have a faulty circuit breaker! – borrow and test with a replacement

ANSWER : Either the brushes are bad, OR worse iis that one of the armature windings has shorted or is open. Brishes are easy fix, shorted armature is more expensive.

Motor runs, but chain does not move – Remington Electric Chain Saw
ANSWER : Check to see if the chain is on the sprocket to do this you will probably have to remove the side cover on the saw if chain is on sprocket and still will not move then you may have a sheared key in the key way if this saw has one, if it does you should be able to see the key way on the end of the shaft coming out of the motor. there should be a nut that holds the sprocket in place if that nut is loose and the shaft is splined instead of having a key way the the sprocket could slip while the motor is turning.
