You should not drive with a broken driveshaft. This is the part of the drivetrain that transfers engine power into torque and causes your wheels to turn. You`ll lose virtually all ability to control the vehicle without it.
A broken driveshaft can prevent wheels from turning properly, giving you trouble when trying to make turns. This issue limits your overall control of the car. You need any issues that prevent you from driving the car correctly addressed right away for safe driving and continued use of the vehicle.
The cause of this is a load pressure running through the center of the shaft. This is often found when a vertical facing motor has a load set on top with improper mounting. When a shaft has a sort of circular pattern of breaks, seemingly to rotate in one direction, this is a sign of torsional overload.
If you allow the driveshaft to die completely, then it will reach the point where the wheels no longer receive any power. While there is no set lifespan of a driveshaft, it typically can last about 75,000 miles.
The Drive Shaft Repair process is very important. If your vehicle has issues more often than not the drive shaft can be problematic and you have to fix it. If the driveshaft just doesn`t work the way it should, it can end up being super demanding and your vehicle will malfunction more and more.
Yes, you can temporarily drive on a broken CV axle.
While you technically can drive with a broken CV axle, doing so will only cause the joint to further disintegrate—and you risk getting into an accident. As you drive, you may notice the vehicle pulling in one direction.
Changing a drive shaft is actually a simple task that a home mechanic can undertake without too much trepidation. It`s just a case of being thorough, being safe, and of course having your trusty Haynes Manual to hand.
Overall efficiency of the drivetrain
This means that around 15.9 % of the engine power is lost through the drivetrain. The efficiency could be even lower for four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles which have a central differential.
An aluminum driveshaft will support up to 900 lb-ft or 900 to 1,000 hp, making it a great lightweight choice for most muscle cars. However, it is not as strong as steel, so some custom driveshaft shops do not have twist guarantees on aluminum driveshafts.
Technically, you can drive a 4WD without a front driveshaft . However, doing so will undoubtedly cause problems that will be expensive to fix. If you have a 4WD vehicle, the front driveshaft is what sends power from the engine to the front wheels.

Clutch not engaging (unlikely)
Broken flex shaft (likely)You need to partially disassemble the unit to find out. I believe you will need a T25 or T27 torx head. Remove the screws from the clutch housing that connects the engine to the shaft.Pull it apart. Spin the shaft manually. If nothing its the shaft. Otherwise its the clutch.Best regardsMike

Cub Cadet 129- The drive shaft from the engine to the hydrostatic drive does not line up at the hydro end. What should I do? The roll pin in the shaft at the engine hub it connects to kept shearing, and there was alot of wobble in the shaft, so I bought a new shaft and hub(the old hub had a slot slot worn it 3/4″ long), also, there was a great deal of wear and play on the hydro end of the bracket attached to the hydro shaft that the flexible disc attaches to, so I changed that as well. Now when installing the new shaft it is misaligned-the shaft being about 1/4″ higher than the hydro connection point. Should I shim the front of the motor up to lower the shaft in the back?
ANSWER : This mis alignment of 1/4″ is about normal that is how and why cub put the rubber flex coupling on the hydro… however if there is play in the hyro input shaft then we need to determine what the cause of this is. Good luck
