We got this second hand without a manual so if everything is in it's proper place. It started fine the first few times. Seems to me the cord is somewhat short, and it is difficult to get it to crank around. When it does seem to catch, it will try and bite your hand off on the recoil. Also, there is some sort of spring “thing” on top of the priming bulb that I'm not sure about. What position is it supposed to be in? How many springs is it supposed to have? Help if you can. Thanks

Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Q. Why is my lawn mower turning over but not starting? The most likely reason is bad gas. Gas that sits for many months during the off-season will eventually break down, gumming up the fuel line and carburetor in the engine and preventing it from starting.
If your Briggs & Stratton engine has a spark but won`t run, then it is most likely a problem with the gas or air intake in the engine. The spark on the spark plug ignites the gas in the piston, but if the air filter is clogged or the gas can`t flow, then the engine won`t start.
If the starter motor spins but does not crank the engine, you likely have a problem with… Faulty or damaged battery. To address this issues, check the battery and charging system for problems.
The buying spree lacked strategic focus and ultimately failed to turn around the company`s decline. Rather than investing in research and innovation, Briggs` management tried to buy success while continuing to enrich its executives and stockholders.
If your lawnmower is starting and then stalling, the most likely issue is the carburetor. The most common issue is that the carburetor is dirty. Here`s what you need to know about how a dirty carburetor can cause a lawnmower to start, then stall out and die.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.
If it won`t start or fire with spray fuel, you probably have an ignition system problem, most likely a bad ignition coil. However, if it starts and dies, that proves the ignition is working and the problem is fuel starvation. Check the fuel filter first by disconnecting the fuel line from the filter to the carb.
Some of the B&S auto choke carburetors tend to supply too much fuel to the cylinder when hot starting; this floods the spark plug, causing a no start. They have since modified the carburetor. So if you have an auto choke, Briggs, with the hot start problem, go ahead and swap out the carburetor.

My weedeater 500 will start but wont hold
ANSWER : It sounds like your carburetor is gummed up and needs to be cleaned and
rebuilt. Most carburetors can be cleaned and rebuild but most owners
will not have the proper equipment to do a thorough job. Take it to a
good servicing dealer for his advice and estimate. Sometimes there is a
gasket or a valve problem and a good experience mechanic can
tell a lot by just listening to the engine for a few seconds.
