Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Q. Why is my lawn mower turning over but not starting? The most likely reason is bad gas. Gas that sits for many months during the off-season will eventually break down, gumming up the fuel line and carburetor in the engine and preventing it from starting.
Your lawn mower turning over but not starting due to several reasons, such as a faulty or disconnected plug, a disconnected spark plug wire, a clogged air filter, or a contaminated fuel tank. A faulty carburetor, a dirty cutting deck, or a dysfunctional flywheel brake can also cause this.
If your Briggs & Stratton engine has a spark but won`t run, then it is most likely a problem with the gas or air intake in the engine. The spark on the spark plug ignites the gas in the piston, but if the air filter is clogged or the gas can`t flow, then the engine won`t start.

The buying spree lacked strategic focus and ultimately failed to turn around the company`s decline. Rather than investing in research and innovation, Briggs` management tried to buy success while continuing to enrich its executives and stockholders.
If the starter motor spins but does not crank the engine, you likely have a problem with… Faulty or damaged battery. To address this issues, check the battery and charging system for problems.
Some of the B&S auto choke carburetors tend to supply too much fuel to the cylinder when hot starting; this floods the spark plug, causing a no start. They have since modified the carburetor. So if you have an auto choke, Briggs, with the hot start problem, go ahead and swap out the carburetor.

There is oil in my air filter and pooled around the top of the yellow part of the mower and now it won’t start. Do I have an oil leak somewhere or what?
ANSWER : Perhaps you tipped your mower over to clean underneath it? If you tip it the wrong way, yes, the oil will run up and into the carburetor, then out the carb and into the air filter. An oil leak would not cause this to happen due to gravity. If this was caused by tipping the mower, then let it set upright for a time and let everything run back to where it’s suppose to go. It will take a bit to start it, but should work then. I’m hoping this is what your problem is. I hope this helps. James
