Gas Walk-Behind Mowers

Most Toro walk-behind power mowers have a fuel capacity of about 1/4 gallon or a quart. Walk-behind mowers take significantly less fuel than riding mowers because they`re partially powered by your motion.

If there are two bolts, the off-center one is a drain, which you can use to get rid of any fuel without removing the bowl; place a container beneath the carburetor and remove the bolt. Any fuel present should trickle out.

Step 2: Prep the Mower for Storage

If you keep your mower in the basement during the winter, you should remove the fuel regardless of how much is left because storing it inside could be a fire hazard. If there`s only a little fuel left after the last mow of the season, your best bet is to run the tank dry.

Most riding mowers last between 500-700 hours, although some can run for as much as 1,000 hours if cared for and maintained properly.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

The Float Bowl Drain screw allows you to drain the fuel out of the carburetor bowl without removing the bowl.

The 42-inch Yard Machines Riding Mower makes it easy for you to get yard work done. This hardworking machine features a Briggs & Stratton 17.5HP engine as well as a seven-speed shift-on-the-go transmission to give you the power to drive the riding mower up small hills and ridges.
Usually, there are two straps that wrap around the fuel tank, the ends of which are adapted to bolts that fasten through a bracket mounted to the vehicle`s frame. Some vehicles have two support frames similar to a trapeze with four bolts fitted through them which must be removed.
First, you`ll need to lift the vehicle so you can remove the tank. If there`s gas in the tank, you`ll have to drain it into an approved container first. It`s important to clean the tank thoroughly during the repair.
It has a 140cc Briggs and Stratton® engine featuring one-step starting, no priming needed.
How long can gas sit in a lawn mower? Depending on the gasoline formula it can degrade in as little of 30 days. Properly treated gasoline can stay good for up to a year. To prevent this from happening, you have two choices: empty the gas tank or add a fuel stabilizer.
Oil changes aren`t technically required before putting a lawn mower into storage. Oil left for a year or two won`t deteriorate or gel like gasoline, nor will it clog any narrow passages, so the system doesn`t need to be drained or treated.
Though it naturally degrades and loses combustibility over time due to oxidation and evaporation of its volatile compounds, gasoline usually lasts 3 to 6 months when properly stored in a tightly sealed gas can or metal tank that`s within the capacity limits recommended by your local fire department (usually no more …
How long will a residential lawn mower last? The average residential mower is used for 1-2 hours per mow with 35 cuts per year. Based on that usage, a lower-quality line of residential mowers is expected to last 450-500 hours, while a John Deere residential lawn mower will last around 1,000-1,500 hours.
So how many hours do riding mowers last? A typical riding mower that`s well maintained will last 1500 hours plus. A riding mower that`s meticulously maintained will last 20 plus years.
Power rating of corded electric lawnmowers

Your lawnmower must be powerful enough to cover the lawn it will be mowing. For an area of 300 m², you`ll need a power rating of 100 to 1300 W; go for 1400 to 1800 W for areas of up to 700 m².

For lawn mowers with up to a 42-inch cutting deck, look for at least a 14-hp engine to adequately power the deck and the drive wheels. For a 42- to 46-inch cutting deck, a 14- to 16-hp engine will be ideal. Mowers with a 46-inch to 54-inch cutting deck require an 18- to 24-hp engine.
Cleaning the carburetor while it`s running is best because it allows the cleaner to penetrate and clean the throat of the carburetor, removing deposits in the lower sections.
However, it`s important to use a non-corrosive cleaner which doesn`t harm or degrade any plastic or rubber pieces on the carburetor. You should avoid using vinegar, because the acetic acid makes metal susceptible to rust.
WD-40 Specialist® Carb/Throttle Body & Parts Cleaner with attachable precision straw is the only all-in-one carburetor cleaner spray you will need to clean your carburetor, throttle body, and unpainted metal parts.
There are two screw control on the car`s carburettor, they are idle speed air screw and idle mixture air screw.

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?

How do I change the fuel filter on a yard Machine 6 Hp mower
ANSWER : A lot of the smaller machines do not have fuel filters, unless you put one in line yourself. Some will have a small screen in side to fuel tank or if you separate the tank from carb you might find a filter, most likely your machine is not equipped with a filter. Good Luck…

Briggs & Stratton 6hp yard machine with 21inch cut. Not getting fuel. I replaced a bad fuel line and now no fuel! If I take the air filter off and spray fuel into the carb it runs until I quit.
ANSWER : The fuel bowl needs to be removed and a new float and needle needs to be installed. The float “floats” in the gas bowl raising the needle, letting fuel into the carb. The repair kit cost about $5 and easily replaced. The float is attached with a pin and the needle fits on the float.

ANSWER : Hi beverlygalmo…

You may need to have your carburetor rebuilt…you can follow the instructions below…

Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they will be located in the fuel tank.If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit. When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws. But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper. That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
