Your riding mower belt keeps coming off because of several possible causes such as a damaged, dirty, or incorrectly installed belt. This problem can also be due to an oil leak, damaged mower pulleys, damaged bearings, or a misaligned or stretched out belt.
Slipping can be the result of a loss of belt tension (or a weak automatic tensioner) or pulley misalignment. When the belt slips off the track, the friction between the belt and accessory drive pulleys causes the belt to overheat. If you hear a high pitched squealing noise, it`s probably time for a switch.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
Improper belt tension is the most common and obvious cause of slip, which generates unwanted heat. The friction that occurs when a V-belt slips in a pulley causes belt sidewalls to become glazed, and decreases gripping ability.
Check on how the belt gives way to your pressure; it should not be loose enough to give way more than a few inches. For mower belts that give way more than two inches, you need to tighten them according to the model`s manual.
There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.

Belt for self popelled mower keeps breaking? Cannot keep a new belt on pulley
ANSWER : Check that the pulley isn’t seizing up and causing the belt to snap, also be sure you loosen up the self propelled mechanismn by spraying down with WD 40, too much belt tension can cause this, but it rather seems like the belt pulley seizes and the engines drive pulley keeps turning causing the belt to overheat and break or stretch and come flying off.

Why does my mower deck belt on john deere 316 keeps breaking
ANSWER : There are a few causes for this and its not just this brand or model. First check that belt is installed correctly, check the part that keeps the belt on the belt rollers the belt should be between the garde and belt wheel, check for shine spots where belt is rubbing, Some times the mower deck is not set even or too low it can put the belt at too much of an angel causing the top of roller to cut it. So check the deck level there are adjustment devices on the mower to adjust, check for shine spots and for correct belt installment, and check roller wheel top for cuts or sharp spots, and check belt tension to see if it is to tight or too lose, also check that rollers spin free and there is not one stuck that could be heating the belt up too much, And last but not least make sure you are using the proper belt that is made for a mower fan belts don’t last very long on a mower.
