Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Hello,

I just saw your post. Check the area between the housing and the head, along the shaft. Fibrous debris (in my area, this loosely translates into “lilly leaves”) gets wound around the shaft, and will slow the universe down to a crawl. The only way to get it loose is to cut it loose, or unwind it.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

To replace it, simply remove and replace the bump cap with a new one. The cap allows you to feed more line when you tap it on the ground. If this cap is broken or worn out over time, it can malfunction, causing too much line to feed out when you bump it.
Another reason the feeding line may not be working is that the line or lever is old and worn. An old line is more likely to kink and get jammed in the trimmer. If this is the issue, replace the line, making sure to get the correct size, and wind it neatly in the direction indicated on the spool.
If the engine is running fast (revving high):

Make sure that the choke is disengaged and the throttle hold has been reset by pressing the trigger. You can check the throttle cable to make sure there are no kinks found in it – however this requires a mechanical proficiency to strip down the machine uncovering the cable.

Most string trimmers use a flexible drive shaft inside the shaft housing even if the shaft is straight. These flex shafts can start to vibrate when they wear out, or when they aren`t properly lubricated. Vibration can also occur when the connection between the flex shaft and the trimmer head is loose or worn.
If your blade isn`t spinning while in use, consider raising the height of the blade in order to reduce the strain on the Edger. Start the Edger slightly out of the grass and drop in to position and cut at a steady pace. If the blade begins to bog down, you are edging too quickly; slow your pace.
The air filter or exhaust port may be blocked. The trimmer may need lubrication and cooling fins or air passages may be blocked. A cordless trimmer`s battery or charger may be faulty.
You need to leave about six inches of string hanging from the spool when you are done adding your new string. You should use a heavy-duty pair of scissors to snip the string.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.

I was trimming and the head stopped turning, motor still going. Is there a repair center around Charlotte,NC???
ANSWER : May have grass or line bound up between moving and non moving parts. If motor is free wheeling, then the plastic driven gear is likely damaged. The part is not consumer available. No one that I have read about has been able to find it.

The string on my duel fed grasshog is wrapped hopelessly underneath the spinner. How do I get the thing apart?
ANSWER : Hi There,

Hey, it happens. But line is cheap compared to the time it may take to dismantle and then reassemble the unit. Especially if you’re at a clients.

I use wire cutters and needle nose pliers to clear that birds nest quickly.

If the unit has a habit of tangling, just use less line when loading.

Call this an alternative solution.

Mike
