How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Carburetor adjustment may not be properly set for correct engine performance. Anti-afterfire solenoid may not be working properly.
The spark inside the chamber may not burn up all the fuel, allowing a little extra gasoline vapor to enter the exhaust, and lead to a backfire. This can be caused by a faulty mass airflow sensor or a clogged engine air filter “choking” the engine and not allowing enough oxygen to flow into it.
The primary cause of a backfire is decelerating too quickly. The simple fix for this is just to lower the engine speed a bit more gradually. If you have a throttle that you use to reduce speed, gradually let it up instead of letting it rebound quickly.
Assuming all of your plugs and wires are in the correct locations and you haven`t messed with the timing at all, then the most common cause of backfiring through the carb (spitting or coughing) is in the morning when a carb`s air/fuel mixture is a bit too lean. This usually goes away once the engine warms-up.
Another possible cause of your backfire is a spark plug refusing to “spark” when the exhaust valve opens. If the air/fuel mixture has become too rich, unburned fuel is left in the exhaust system. The misfired spark plug ignites the rich air/fuel mixture, causing a loud “bang” in the tail pipe.
Engine Backfires

Backfiring can damage other parts of your car if it`s allowed to continue, so it should always be checked out. But it`s sometimes caused by the ignition coil failing to ignite the fuel in the combustion cycle, and allowing it to infiltrate the exhaust system.

Backfires

Touching back on air to fuel ratios, a vacuum leak will likely make your engine run “lean” (too much air.) This means the engine cannot efficiently ignite fuel in the combustion chamber. When fuel builds up in the cylinders and combustion occurs, it will expel a backfire.

If the spark fires in the wrong cylinder at the wrong time, this is sure to lead to a backfire, among other problems! This problem can also occur if the spark plug wires are crossed, say, after having your spark plugs replaced — but, again, modern cars have engineered this problem away for the most part.
There`s a variety of factors that can cause your car to backfire, but the most common ones are having a poor air to fuel ratio, a misfiring spark plug, or good old-fashioned bad timing.
If you only hear popping when accelerating, it`s likely due to an issue with your fuel mixture or ignition timing. If your car is running too lean (not enough fuel), it can cause knocking and popping sounds. If your ignition timing is off, it can also cause these sounds.

The popping is a result of the air/fuel mixture becoming very lean when the throttle is closed and the engine is rotating well above idle speed.

Carb screws need adjusted i need to know the settings
ANSWER : Hi. Lightly seat the low screw and bring it out one and a quarter turns. Lightly seat the high and bring it out one turn. Adjust idle screw to suit. Regards Phil.

I have a 266 se husky saw and I can not get it to start, there is spark and fresh fuel in the saw, I have put a kit in the carb and the saw will fire but stop, it appears to flood with fuel after a short period of time while attempting to start it.The saw was running fine until the carb came loose on the barrel but I have been unsucessful at getting it to run since I have replaced the gasket between the carb and cylinder.
ANSWER : It probably damaged the diaphram when the carb came loose. you could try adjusting the carb. that will solve it every once in a while.

Back fireing 22hp v-twin briggs, run but back fires all the time it’s running. is this a valve or damaged flywheel key problem?
ANSWER : I dont think that it would keep running if it was a damaged flywheel key? Seems like eventually it would go on and slip too much. But a leaking valve sounds like the most logical answer. Take the spark plugs out and stick your finger over each cylinder and turn it over. see if one of em has more compression than the other. If one is take the valve cover off that one. and see if you can see a week spring or something.

The engine fires, runs for 5-10 seconds and then dies. If I reprime it, it will repeat the same way over and over.
ANSWER : There is a number of different problems that could account for this.you may need to replace a clogged fuel filter, also check to see if the air filter is clean… there is also the possibility that you may need to put in a new carb kit.You may also want to check and make sure that the choke is not sticking.good luck

2375 ”wild thing” poulan saw hard starting after carb rebuild
ANSWER : Through trial and error on fairly new Poulin Pro, found that the usual 3-half turns for both high and low was too much (flooded) (Used to be good starting point on weed eaters years ago. So, turned both all the way in, and only backed out 1-full turn. (2-halves) Saw fired up perfectly, and ran wide open just fine. Try that.
