It sounds like there is a problem in the gearbox driving the auger. If the gear is worn you can sometimes rotate the auger and the impeller until you feel an attempt to engage or an actual engagement.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Damaged belt – Cogged or non-cogged V-belts or flat belts drive the auger when the drive pulley or pulleys are engaged. If the belt or belts are worn, stretched, or broken, the auger won`t be able to rotate. You should inspect the belt or belts for any sign of wear or damage and replace with new ones if necessary.
If your auger keeps turning when the engine is idling, the carburetor may need to be adjusted. The clutch controls the movement of the auger by engaging them when the engine has reached a set speed.
On a cool grill, remove the grates, drip pan, heat baffle/shield, and hopper to see the auger parts. If the auger has pellets stuck inside the auger shaft and is not turning, it is most likely jammed.
The most common method for drive tensioning is “force deflection.” A predetermined force is applied to the open span of the belt drive (Fig. 2). If the deflection exceeds 1/64 in. for every inch of span length, the drive is tensioned higher.
Belt tension is measured by plucking the belt span while holding a sensor close by. Belt tension is adjusted until the belt span frequency, or measured tension level is within manufacturer`s recommendations.
A snowblower auger should not spin freely when the auger control lever is off. A free-spinning auger is a symptom of broken shear pins. Shear pins are a fail-safe feature designed to break when the auger hits a solid object.

If the auger is not rotating it may be due to the auger shaft being jammed, or a failed (burnt-out) auger motor. If the auger shaft is moving freely (see how to check that further below) but not rotating, then it is possible the auger motor is the issue.

My MTD 10hp auger will not turn. I adjusted the auger cable by tightening the bolt on the handle. I disconnected the spark plug and checked the shear pins on both sides of the auger. They are both still there. The snow thrower worked fine when I last used it in
April of 2010. The snow thrower starts, and goes in all gears in forward and reverse. Is there a separate belt to turn the augers?
Thank you
ANSWER : Yes there are 2 belts one for the drive and one for the auger. If you remove the cover on top that is located between the engine and the auger housing you can check the belts. The auger belt has come off the pulley or is broken. Hope this helps you out. Best regards and good luck.

I have a 5/22 2 stage MTD snowthrower and from behing the machine, the right side auger is not spinning. The left side works fine, when the engine is off, the right side spins freely while the left is locked and will not turn by hand. Is this a broken belt? a shear pin? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan
ANSWER : Your shear pin(s) are broken on that side they will look o.k. but are snapped off inside drive them out with a large nail or center-punch,don’t use a regular bolt to replace the shear pin as they will fit, because if it gets plugged again the gearbox will be your next expensive shear pin to replace

When you pull down handle, the machine will not ingage and throw snow.
ANSWER : I assume you are not trying to throw snow with a 22″ push mower. I would narrow your problem to the following items:Bad belt driving the auger.Broken shear pins in the auger unit or Worn out paddles that throw the snow. All of these items are replaceable.I recommend consulting a local dealer like www.arcolawn.com to see if any updates are recommended for your machine.Good luck

Blade belt diagram for an is 2000 61 inch – Ferris IS2000 61"" Zero Turn Lawn Mower 5900586"
ANSWER : I don’t have a diagram but we just had to replace our belt and Here’s how we did it. Note that the shiny gold/silver pulleys make contact with the flat side of the belt while the black pulleys make contact with the u-shaped side of the belt. If you look at the pulleys you will see they have different shapes to correspond with the different shape on each side of the belt. The drive pulley at the back makes contact with the u-shaped side of the belt.Release the tension spring and thread the belt. Belt slips under the middle back pulley with the tension spring released. Then use a spring pulling tool (there is such a thing) or another method to pull the tension spring back over the bolt. Ensure belt is threaded properly with no twisting and nothing caught in the pulleys before firing it up.Hope that helps.
