How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If your trimmer engine idles, but stalls on throttle, check the following parts: the gasket, primer bulb, fuel filter, air filter, fuel vent, fuel line, and carburetor. The repair and symptom guide will help you better identify the part needed to be replaced and how.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
If the engine will idle but dies at full throttle the main jet in the carburetor may be plugged. You can repair a plugged main jet by cleaning it, replacing the jet, or replacing the carburetor. If you choose to clean or replace the main jet, you will also want to clean the rest of the carburetor.
When a dirt bike bogs, it simply means it`s not getting enough fuel and the engine sputters or stalls at full throttle. There are two common types of bogging: lean bog and rich bog, distinguishable by how the bike sounds when you throttle. Lean Bog – Happens when there`s too much air and not enough fuel in the engine.
Sometimes the spark arrestor screen can become clogged up itself. Common symptoms include lack of power, especially under load; poor acceleration; engine won`t come up to full RPM; and higher than normal “spit back” through the carburetor.
If a motorcycle or ATV only runs with the choke on, it`s because the richer “choke on” mixture is actually closer to the engine`s normal operating fuel mixture than the leaner “choke off” mixture. So when the choke is turned off, the engine gets too little fuel and too much air for it to run and it stalls.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.
If the choke does not close, then either the linkage is gummed up, the air horn is warped, or the spring tension is too loose or the choke spring has experienced a failure such as an internal break.
Just Like Spark plug fouling, too much oil in the gasoline, inferior oil, a dirty air filter and/or continued operation at less than full throttle will plug the screen with carbon deposits. This prevents exhaust gases from flowing out, which leads to power loss or not running at all.
The most common problem with a string trimmer is that the unit runs out of string. The string may also be twisted or loose on the spool. The cutting head may be dirty or the head outlet guide may be bent. An electric trimmer`s power cord, switch, or motor may fail.

Husqvarna 125L straight shaft trimmer runs only when choke is at half. Fuel mixture is correct and it used to run fine until a larger job I did a month ago (cut about a half acre of 3ft weeds with minimal breaks for the trimmer). Since then, this has been happening. As soon as I start it, let it warm for a minute on half choke and attempt to give it throttle… the thing bogs down like it is starving for fuel. If I want to trim with it, I have to have the throttle wide open and still it doesn’t operate at near full performance for the usual husky trimmer. It smokes a good bit of white smoke out the exhaust (not alot but normal for this old of a trimmer), the plug is new, and the air filter and carb is clear of debris. What the heck is wrong with this high priced problem maker? It is 3 to 4 yrs old, handed down from my father who is meticulous with his equipment and keeps everything in optimal working condition. Any suggestions???
ANSWER : I have found that the carb is not getting gas correctly. Inside the tank there are hoses that feed the carb. With the onset of ethanol the hoses deterioate. I am now pulling small pieces of the fuel line out of the tank. I purchased all new hoses now im trying to find a diagram that shows the tank assembled so I can put it back together. Goof luck my friend.

Only runs with choke on
ANSWER : Sounds like some of the TINY passages [called “galleries”] inside the carburetor have become clogged or partially clogged with fuel residue called “gum” or “varnish.”

Go to your local auto parts store and describe the problem to them, and ask for a solvent “kit” to unclog the carb.

There are a couple of brands, but generally they require that you empty the “old” stale fuel from the tank, add their solvent, crank the engine a few times to get the cleaner into the carb, allow to stand for a few days, add fresh gas and start.
