Garden

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
If there is a little hole at the top of the chain bar sprocket–this is where you lubricate the sprocket on your bar–if you don’t have the little hole by the sprocket then your bar is sealed and dont need to lube the sprocket–but make sure you have oil in your chainsaw’s oil tank–that lubes the bar–chain oil is a must–dont use a chainsaw without it–unless you like to replace your chain and bar on a regular basis..
hope this helps!

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

It is recommended that you grease the bearing in the tip of the bar each time you refuel. Make sure to grease the tip at the end of the day as well to help prevent moisture from entering the bearing as the bar cools.
Without lubricant, the speed at which the chain moves over the chainsaw bar can cause some serious friction. A slowed-down chain and excessive fuel burning mean there`s a lot of friction between your bar and chain, which means a lot of heat is being produced that could do major damage to your saw.
When you put the chain back onto your chainsaw, you will have to lubricate it to clean it, using WD-40® Multi-Use Product. Before refitting the chain into the chainsaw, wipe off all the excess residue and then reattach it to the guide bar.
If you run a chainsaw without bar oil, it`s likely that the chain will heat up and eventually break. This can cause extensive damage to the chainsaw and may even require a new chain and bar. It`s imperative that you use the correct amount of bar oil.
A lubricating tool for select STIHL.

Current STIHL guide bars offer maintenance free sprocket noses, some competitor`s guide bars still require additional grease. This tool only works on select STIHL chainsaws, so visit your local STIHL Dealer to determine if the Guide Bar Grease Gun is right for your saw.

Absolutely. 10w40 is thick enough to mostly stay on the chain. Regular bar and chain oil have additives that keep the oil from slinging off the chain. This is why it is always recommended to use regular chain oil.
Whether you have a gas or electric chainsaw, you`ll find that the chain moves more easily and smoothly with a regular application of Oregon Chainsaw Bar and Chain Oil. This all-season, uncolored lubricant is extra tacky to reduce sling even in weather extremes.
WD-40 Specialist® Cleaner & Degreaser is a water-based, non-flammable, non-aerosol cleaner & degreaser with a unique bio-solvent formula engineered to be powerful yet safe for sensitive surfaces.
Olive oil is another option you could bank on for your chainsaw bar and lube. If you have a handy bottle of olive oil nearby, it`ll work just fine for your chainsaw bar and lube. It has good lubrication properties, and it is biodegradable.
Effective – Vegetable oils have natural properties including good lubricity, resistance to shear, a high flash point, and a high viscosity index. These qualities lend themselves to chain lubricant requirements similar to petroleum-based chain oils, and do not contribute to chain or bar wear over time.
Why use oil? You want lubrication of the actual chain against the bar. You don`t want to chain to burn – which is what might happen if there`s too much friction. Without oil, it causes frictional force on the motor in the chainsaw as well.
NO, outboard two stroke motor oil designed for water cooled engines does not provide the needed protection or lubrication for two stroke air cooled engines.
The chain saw should be oiled before each cut. Manual Oiling System: Lubricate the saw chain by pressing the bulb on the oil reservoir cap twice before making each cut. Hold the bulb down for 3-4 seconds on each press.
Although the clutch shoes of a Stihl chainsaw should never be greased, the needle bearing that fits inside the chain sprocket, which is part of the clutch mechanism, may need occasional lubrication.
Maintain the chainsaw`s bar

To degrease the bar, you should add some degreaser or lubricant such as WD-40® Multi-Use Product, mixed with warm water. Once soaked with the solution, use a rag to remove all the dust and grease. If there is stubborn grime, you can use a wire brush to remove it.

Use canola oil – Canola oil is currently the most common environmentally compatible chain-and-bar lubricant.

Leaks bar oil
ANSWER : The chainsaw squirts oil into the oil hole in the bar. The chain picks up the oil and carries it all the way around the bar lubing it and the chain. When you quit running the saw there is still a lot of oil on the chain and all away around the chain guide in the bar. Once you quit running it and it sets a while all the oil will follow gravity and run to the bottom of the bar and drip out into the case. It’s just another one of life’s little nuisances. Have a nice day! Obwhon

No bar oil circulating… ran without the bar on and there is not enough bar oil coming out. checked the reservoir and cleaned bar- no gunk… how do i get the plate off to inspect the tiny compartment where the bar oil is let out at the chain? at the crank shaft i see that it is reversed threaded, but do i have to undo the spring clamp system or can i just unthread the breaking mechanism or whatever it is on the end of the crank shaft… if so do i have to use the trick with the spark plug and string to keep the shaft from turning while unscrewing the top part?
ANSWER : The item on the end of the crankshaft is the clutch (inner part) and also part of the chain brake (the outer part of the clutch drum). There should be an oil-volume adjustment screw located under the case near where the chain returns to the engine. Turn it CCW somewhat to increase oil volume. Be sure to clean the small oil passages that run from the large holes in the drive end of the bar out to the chain groove on each bar edge. The correct way to set it is have everything assembled, start the engine and run at speed for a few moments with the bar tip near some cardboard–it should throw off a thin line of oil. Hope this helps!

Chain not lubricating
ANSWER : Remove the bar and chain. Clean all parts exposed including the bar drive-end small oil channels that feed oil out to the chain groove on both sides of the bar. Start the engine and look for oil oozing out of a small side port where the bar fits to. If ok and no oil seems to coming from under the case, reassemble all components. Start the engine and run the bar tip at speed near some cardboard–it should throw off a thin line of oil. This saw should have an oil volume adjustment screw in the case back near the lower run of chain or just under the case in the same area. Turn CW to reduce volume. Hope this helps!
