How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

There are three main reasons for a chain to come off: Incorrect bar and/or chain for the saw; check to be sure that you are using the proper chain pitch, gauge and number of drive links to match the guide bar. Chain not properly tensioned; It is normal for a new chain to stretch and require frequent adjustment.
If your chainsaw bounces around when making contact with the wood, it means that that chains teeth are not grabbing on and ripping through the wood. A sharp chain will cut in a uniform and straight line.
Generally speaking, the chain should be a little loose on the chain saw guide bar, but not loose enough that the drive links come out of the bar nose. The bar links should feel like they are raising up, but not actually come out of the guide bar.
Always cut on the compression side first! The area on the outside of the bend will pull apart when cut. This is the tension side. If you decide to cut this side only, the tree will split apart before the cut can be completed.
Tension is found on the outside edge of strained timber and when the cut (kerf) opens. Compression is found on the inside edge of strained timber and when the cut (kerf) closes. For safety, the operator must stand to the side when cutting, as the trunk can move upwards or sideways.
The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line. If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced.
It may be due to the fact that the chain cuts at an angle, is badly sharpened, incorrectly tensioned, or not sufficiently lubricated. Uneven wear of the guide bar in turn causes the chain to rotate at an angle rather than aligned with the bar, creating a vicious circle of wear.
Generally speaking, the chain should be a little loose on the chain saw guide bar, but not loose enough that the drive links come out of the bar nose. The bar links should feel like they are raising up, but not actually come out of the guide bar.

My 18 Inch chain saw will not keep oiling the Chain, I had it worked on and He said it was plugged. How do you unplug it with out taking it all apart. Is there a spot to blow air through. the Preacher..
ANSWER : Remove the chain bar and look just below the bolts holding it in place. You’ll see a small hole where the chain bar oil pump pushes out oil. Make sure this hole is clear then run the saw without the bar on.

Be CAREFUL of fingers!

You should see oil coming out of that hole. If not, you may need more serious work done with the saw (chain bar pump replacement).

Can’t keep pole saw running. It starts fine but when i go to do something it shuts down
ANSWER : It sounds to me like you have a blockage in the high jet. There are 2 jets in the carb a HI and a LOW. If you can determine which is the high jet turn it in gently while counting how many full turns and any partial turn and write it down. (example 2 and one half turns) Then remove the high jet needle valve. Spray some carb cleaner into the hole you took the needle valve out of using the little tube that comes with the can of carb cleaner. then put the needle valve back in and turn it gently till it stops again. Now turn it back out the same amount that you wrote down. It would not hurt to do the other jet as well…
