Unloading Valve
This valve consists of a control chamber with an adjustable spring which pushes the spool down. The valve has two ports: one is connected to the tank and another is connected to the pump. The valve is operated by movement of the spool. Normally, the valve is closed, and the tank port is also closed.
Types of Pressure Washer Unloader Valves
Two of the more common types are a trapped pressure unloader valve and a flow actuated unloader valve. The trapped pressure unloader valve works by giving water access to the back of the pistons. When you release the trigger, the pressure increases and pushes the spring open.
Unloader valve failure — Power lags also result from failed unloader valves. This problem can be diagnosed by manually enacting the valve function. Open the tank and drain out the air and water, then close and power back up. If the compressor bogs down once again, the valve needs to be replaced.
With a slotted screwdriver, turn the screw in the center of the knob clockwise, until flow can be heard escaping from the internal valve. Slowly turn the screw counterclockwise until the flow from the relief valve stops. Turn the screw an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn counter-clockwise.
Many valves have a nut, screw, or knob attached to them that allow you to do the actual adjusting. Turning the screw or knob clockwise typically increases the water pressure while turning it counter-clockwise lowers the pressure.
How Do I Tell If My Unloader Valve is Bad? In most occurrences, the first symptom of an unloader valve going bad is no pressure from the wand when the trigger is pressed. This happens when the unloader valve gets stuck open and does not allow water to enter the hose and trigger.
What is an unloader valve? Pressure-regulating unloader valves provide the ability to control pressure similarly to regulators, but their special function is decreasing pump head pressure to very low PSI values when the valves are closed.
Potential Problems with Compressor Unloader Valves
Once the pressure inside the cylinder head assembly and discharge line reaches the cut-in setting, the compressor will turn on. This can lead to short cycling, which may significantly decrease system efficiency and even cause serious damage to the compressor.

You should also never set your pressure washer above 2,200 psi when washing your car. 1,500 psi is really all you need to get a good deep clean; any pressure higher than that won`t make a noticeable performance difference.
