Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable. For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches.
On most mowers, you can adjust the height by raising or lowering the wheels or by pushing and releasing a lever. Place the mower on a flat surface. Measure the distance from that surface to the blade on rotary mowers or to the bedknife on reel mowers.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck.
Pushing. The mower`s larger rear wheels allow it to be pushed easier than smaller wheels. The rear wheels are also easier to use on hard ground as smaller wheels do not have as much pushing power as larger wheels.
High wheels are best for bumpy or difficult terrain. With large wheels in the back, you can go over any terrain with ease. A high-wheeled model might cost a little more, but it`s worth it if needed. Typically, the cost difference is very minimal anyway.
The first step to a beautiful lawn is a level mower deck. Level your mower deck once or twice a season.
For a typical residential Midwest lawn, maintain a height of 3 inches or higher. Taller grass shades out weed seeds and keeps soil cooler. Taller grass means longer roots and greater ability to withstand drought and reach nutrients.
The last mowing of the year should be at your normal mowing height. Cool-season grasses are typically kept from 2 to 4 inches. grasses such as bermuda and zoysia can be kept much shorter.

I cannot pull the lever back on my Toro Grandstand in order to lift the blade into the height I would like. Would you know how to fix this?
Thank you
ANSWER : Have you ever oiled all the little working parts on your mower? The adjusters also get dry and they rust up or just get dirty. You can try to oil all the areas that move on the height adjusters and see what happens.

ANSWER : I know this will sound a little crazy, but check the air pressure in you tires. My neighbor had the same problem. The tires looked okay until he sat on the mower. One of the rear tires was low which caused the mower to sit lower on one side. Next check the linkages on the deck to make sure they are hooked up and haven’t fell off.

Left side blade cuts about an inch lower than right side , the left 21″ when cutting is about an inch lower than the right 21″, looks terrible, checked tire pressure and that was not the problem
ANSWER : Measure the height of cut from the ground to the bottom of the deck all the way around, if it is the same the blade or bearing housing is at fault, if it is lower on the left look for a bent or broken mount from the deck to the tractor on that side.

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. My mower is a model 917.259541 tractor and the blades currently on it are part #134149. I want to make sure I get the right size to replace them. Also, is there a source for a bagging system for this mower, that won’t cost as much as one from Sears?
ANSWER : The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.
