A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
An over-tightened belt can burn out any bearing that the belt rotates on, including alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, idler pulleys, etc. An over-tightened timing belt can ruin any pulley bearing it is connected with.

Drive belt Have replace drive belt but mower still has no forward movement. Mtd 19 In. 173 CC OHV 3-In-1 self propelled. Drive will not engage. Appears as if the belt is too loose even when the drive control bar is depressed all the way. Is this adjustable? This mower hasn’t enough hours on it to stretch the belt, it seems in great shape.
ANSWER : Between the handle and the connection to the drive system, look for adjustment screw or nut and screw on cable. Maybe even check the spring tension, if handle is spring loaded and the spring is stretched it will not engage drive system. If no adjustment to be found then you must get new belt. Good Luck…
