How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

This could`ve occurred when it was tipped over, or you may have overfilled it when you added oil. First be sure the mower is not overfilled with oil. If it is, turn the mower up on the oil fill tube side, with a pan in place to catch the oil, remove the oil fill cap & allow the oil to drain out into the pan.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Why Is My Lawnmower Turning Over But Not Starting? If you pull the cord and hear your engine turn over, but your mower is not starting, the most common reasons for this are low fuel, a broken gas valve, or a bad choke fault. A broker spark plug could also be the culprit.
Remove oil cap. Tip mower on its side and allow the oil to drain out into a pan until your mower`s oil level is at the right level. Do not tip mower to the front, only to the side or the back.
Wait one to two minutes for the oil to settle into the engine of your walk-behind mower and then follow the instructions in the manual for checking the oil level. After you`re finished, replace the dipstick.
Check the fuse

The fuse on most riding mowers is connected to the small red wire that connects to the starter solenoid post. Check the fuse and replace it if it`s blown. If you replace the fuse and it continues to blow, you`ll need to find the short in the wiring or component that`s causing the fuse to blow.

If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
If the oil level is a little above the full mark, that shouldn`t cause problems. If it`s overfilled by half a quart or more, or foam shows on the dipstick, the best fix is to have the oil drained and refilled to the proper level.
If the oil is too thick (aka, the viscosity is high), your car may not start in cold temperatures (cold weather places more strain on a vehicle in any case). When this happens, the thick liquid can`t properly lubricate every part, and it creates enough resistance to impair the most important function–ignition.
Oil capacity is typically 15oz or 18oz*. Check oil level during the season and add when necessary. Change engine oil every 50 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
Motor oil from your lawn tools can sometimes drip onto your lawn. A few drops here and there won`t affect your plants, but if you have a large leak or if you spill a lot of motor oil on your lawn, it can harm your soil and kill your plants. You`ll need to remove the oil as soon as possible by shoveling it away.
Oil provides lubrication to the internal components of the lawn mower`s engine. A lawn mower can run without oil, but this will damage the metal parts of the engine beyond repair. Some lawn mowers have a low oil level indicator, which will prevent the mower from starting.
When oil gets into your lawnmower`s gas tank, the engine will damage, and you will see smoke and fume coming out of the mower. The machine would reduce its performance, and it would also result in clogging the fuel system.

Dont know what type of oil to use – Toro Power Lawn Mower
ANSWER : Put straight 30 weight motor oil in it. Not 10W30 or any multi-viscosity oil. Straight 30 weight motor oil. If you’re doing a complete oil change, then you may want to use Synthetic 30 weight, which will last longer between oil changes and also make your engine last longer (but it costs more too). Best of luck to you.James

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.
