A low charge may not provide enough juice to engage the PTO. If you do hear the click, there is power going to it. There could be a problem with safety switches. On most newer model lawn mowers, the brake has to be disengaged or off for the blades to operate.
Common problems on the list include things like uneven grass cutting, slipping belts, or minor engine problems. John Deere also claims that lighting issues and battery problems are common. Still, John Deere tractors are largely reputed for their reliability.
The PTO lever allows the operator to quickly and smoothly control engagement and disengagement of the PTO using an easily-accessible control lever. If the tractor is stopped or is being downshifted, the PTO rpm levels can be maintained. To activate the PTO, simply move control lever forward.
Based on that usage, a lower-quality line of residential mowers is expected to last 450-500 hours, while a John Deere residential lawn mower will last around 1,000-1,500 hours. Those estimates are made assuming that proper care and regular maintenance are taking place.
The average lifespan of a tractor is 4,000 or more hours. Low hours on a tractor are pretty much anything less than where the warranty runs out.
In 1963, the 3010 and 4010 were replaced by the 3020 and 4020, both of which were offered with a powershift transmission designed by a former Ford employee. The 4020 is one of the most popular tractors Deere & Company has ever made.

JD 6400 tractor, PTO light flashes when engaged but PTO does not work.
The most likely problem is the pto solenoid valve on the rear of the tractor. It could be the speed sensor but you won’t know until you get the codes read by the dealer.I have had to replace the b.c.u. for this problem but it is not common.
Need the pto to work on a 6300 john deere tractor we have changed the fuses and changed the sencer on the back can you help
If you have tried a new sensor and a new switch the the next step is to replace the pto solenoid valve. If that proves fruitless then the b.c.u.needs to be replaced or bypassed. The solenoid valve will cure your problem 90% of the time.If that does not work, let me know,i can tell you how to by-pass the b.c.u..
Intermittent PTO Problem on John Deer 6400
You likely need the speed sensor replaced in the rear of the tractor, either above or below the pto shaft. There is also a pto relay module beside the fuse panel that may need to be replace(only on the early 6000 series tractors, later it was replaced by the bcu).If you can get the codes from the bcu and relay the info to me i can likely tell you for sure what you need to do if none of the above works.
How does it start
You need to disengage the pto or the seat switch is not working.Try bouncing on the seat a few times and take a look at the pto switch wires, let me know what you find out.

If it is a cub cadet this seems to become a common problem. So far I have not heard of any recalls.
