op off, blowing black smoke as it does this. The air vane governor is either the cause or it is being affected by the problem as it moves with the change in rpm. I’ve cleaned the carb. Gas is fresh. I bought the mower in this condition so I don’t know how long it’s been like this.

You should check the vacu jet carb on this mower for either a vacuum leak where it mounts to the gas tank, a blocked or split intake tube in the the gas tank or a weak/worn out diaphragm.
You can spray a little carb cleaner at the base of the carb while its hunting and see if it smooths out. If it does you have a warp between the carb and tank. Either the tank is bowed or the carb *(nowadays made of plastic) is not flat anymore.
You can either buy a new carb or gently sand the warped one a little and see if that works.
Be sure to take pictures of your carb setup before removing it so you can reassemble later.

I have a Poulan push mower that after mowing in a ditch started making a loud noise and running rough. It almost sounded as if metal was hitting metal. The mower was vibrating more than normal. I checked under the mower and nothing is hitting. After a few times of stopping the mower engine because it sound as if it is going to die down the mower will not start now. The shaft does not appear bent and the blade appears ok. The mower has oil, a good spark plug and a clean air filter. It was running fine until that moment. I did not see anything that I hit but it is possible I hit something in the ditch like a pine cone or branch. What could the problem be and how would I go about fixing it?
ANSWER : If you are sure the oil level is correct then it sounds like it’s about to die, unfortunately. A pine cone shouldn’t cause any damage, but a large branch may do so. Was it smoking before you shut it down? The vibration could be caused from a bent blade. It could also be caused from a part breaking in the motor. I wish I could have given you better news!

ANSWER : Will it stay running with your choke on? if so then clean your carb. if not then look for a blockage from tank to carb. ie fuel shut off, deteriorated fuel line. plugged filter etc
I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!
My tractor stalls like it is starved for gas although the gas tank is full. I,ve changed the fuel filter and the gas cap. I’ve cleaned out the gas tank, gas lines, and the carburetor bowl. The problem seems more acute when the gas tank is full or near full. At this time to alleviate the problem, I blow through the gas cap and the fuel filter fills with gas and it runs good again. But as soon as the fuel filter has no more gas, of course, it stalls until I blow on the gas cap. As the tank gets down to about 1/3 full, the engine runs OK. What else could cause this condition?
ANSWER : I had a similar problem with a sears tractor. close to the carbarator is a rectangle box with a rubber hose going to the engine block – remove the hose and spray carb cleaner in the hose wait a few mins and try again – its a vacuum for the carb
Lawn scarifier motor runs slow than starts to smoke

ANSWER : Flush gas tank, fill with fresh gas and Stabil. Replace air filter. Remove bowl from carb clean bowl and holes in bowl screw.
Mower start up and runs, but starts to cut back, and smokes just a little bit. The mower stops smoking when it throttle up. It will continue to run but not at full throttle. I can hold a finger gently over the fuel primer bulb and it will throttle up for a small time.
ANSWER : It sounds like she’s being deprived of the correct fuel / air mixture due to a dirty carburetor (the biggest problem with mowers when gas is left to sit for a period of time). If you do not know how to take the carburetor apart and clean it thoroughly, then I suggest taking it to the local shop (hardware store or mower shop) and having it tuned up. My toro 6.5 hp push mower (2010), has no fire to the plug. I have not abused it. i have a small yard and it just gets normal use. Now it won’t fire. I first changed the fuel and cleaned the carb thinking it was that crappy ethanol again. but i grounded out the spark plug and cranked it…no spark. I think it has to do with the lever you pull back to start it . they have some stupid complicated safety contraption that rides along the fly wheel when you pull back on the handle for starting and shutting off the engine. …it looks worn out already…like a mini brake pad. any ideas?…do i really have to replace this garbage every year or am i on the wrong path here?
ANSWER : Unhook your wire from the coil that goes to shut off mechanism, and see if you have spark then. the wire may be grounded out, or your coil might have took a ****
