How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
Hard hot starting mower issue is most likely caused by a failing coil, but there are other possibilities: Plug faulty. Engine flooded. Low oil level.
Gasoline that contains alcohol has a tendency to ignite easier, which can cause afterfire. Small engine muffler type and manufacture. Carburetor adjustment may not be properly set for correct engine performance. Anti-afterfire solenoid may not be working properly.
Backfire, or more accurately “after fire” when it occurs when stopping an engine, is caused by unburned fuel/air mixture being ignited by the heat of the muffler.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

How Do You Fix Overheating Lawn Mowers? To fix overheating lawn mowers you must clean all the parts of the mower, replace or fix the defective parts, observe intervals during your mowing session, use the correct type of engine oil and maintain the correct engine oil level.
Sometimes, the only sign of lawn mower overheating is the machine simply locking up or shutting off. If the engine has been overworked continuously, it might need a professional tuneup. If you notice that there doesn`t seem to be any external cause behind the overheating, it might be time for some expert service.
If the spark fires in the wrong cylinder at the wrong time, this is sure to lead to a backfire, among other problems! This problem can also occur if the spark plug wires are crossed, say, after having your spark plugs replaced — but, again, modern cars have engineered this problem away for the most part.
There`s a variety of factors that can cause your car to backfire, but the most common ones are having a poor air to fuel ratio, a misfiring spark plug, or good old-fashioned bad timing.
The most common reason your car starts then dies immediately is because of a lack of fuel in the engine. This often happens because there is a small amount of fuel in the fuel rail, which helps to start the engine. However, there is no fuel pressure to keep the engine running.

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

I have a Poulan push mower that after mowing in a ditch started making a loud noise and running rough. It almost sounded as if metal was hitting metal. The mower was vibrating more than normal. I checked under the mower and nothing is hitting. After a few times of stopping the mower engine because it sound as if it is going to die down the mower will not start now. The shaft does not appear bent and the blade appears ok. The mower has oil, a good spark plug and a clean air filter. It was running fine until that moment. I did not see anything that I hit but it is possible I hit something in the ditch like a pine cone or branch. What could the problem be and how would I go about fixing it?
ANSWER : If you are sure the oil level is correct then it sounds like it’s about to die, unfortunately. A pine cone shouldn’t cause any damage, but a large branch may do so. Was it smoking before you shut it down? The vibration could be caused from a bent blade. It could also be caused from a part breaking in the motor. I wish I could have given you better news!

Good Luck,

Jim

Self propelled mower will start but want stay running long? it runs about 3 or 4 min. then stop and when i restart it, it will start back up.
ANSWER : The fuel bowl has a float and needle, if the float isn’t floating to open the needle for gas to flow into the carb, it will cut off. A kit can be purchased for about $5 or take yours out and soak and clean then replace. Usually when these go bad its best to replace them.

My mower (12av5560711183621) runs for about 10 minutes then dies. I noticed that the muffler got really hot after only about 5-7 seconds of operation, that leads me to believe that after 10 minutes it gets to hot and maybe vaporizes the gas. what do I do? thank you
ANSWER : If the motor kicks (jerks the starter rope out of your hands) when you try to restart the motor after it has stopped the cause could be overheating. Make sure the oil level is correct, remove the rewind cover and make sure all of the cooling fins are cleaned out.
