How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Stale fuel, dirt, and debris are the most common cause of outdoor power equipment not starting or running properly. If you store equipment with untreated gas in the tank, it can lead to engine damage.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
If the engine will idle but dies at full throttle the main jet in the carburetor may be plugged. You can repair a plugged main jet by cleaning it, replacing the jet, or replacing the carburetor. If you choose to clean or replace the main jet, you will also want to clean the rest of the carburetor.
An engine that will fire and run with the choke closed but dies when the choke is opened likely has debris at least partially blocking the fuel passages in the carburetor. In this condition the closed choke provides enough extra fuel to enter the engine to overcome the lack of fuel flowing through the other passages.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
The governor system is like a cruise control system. It maintains the speed of your lawn mower or outdoor power products.
The acceptable operating speed range is 1800 to 3600 RPM. Idle speed is 1750 RPM. The manufacturer of the equipment on which the engine is used, specifies the top governed no load speed at which the engine may be operated. DO NOT EXCEED this speed.
(1) The blades should always be turned on at full throttle if the mower has a electric P.T.O. switch.
Check the Air Filter: The most common reason why an engine bogs out under acceleration is because the air/fuel mixture is `dirty` or inefficient. If the air filter is clogged or has a lot of dirt in it, it could be bogging down the engine. Clean the air filter and see if the problem goes away.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
The choke circuit consists of the butterfly or choke plate, the pull-off (also called a vacuum break), the choke spring, and the fast-idle cam and screw. Butterfly: The choke plate should fully and easily close against the air horn when the throttle is opened slightly and the spring has tension on it.
The problem may involve an annoying change (up/down) of engine speed while cruising at a steady pace, a low drop (or even cut-out) at idle or when approaching a stop, a wild high engine speed of several thousand rpm followed by a drop to near zero, etc.
The buying spree lacked strategic focus and ultimately failed to turn around the company`s decline. Rather than investing in research and innovation, Briggs` management tried to buy success while continuing to enrich its executives and stockholders.
A dead battery is the most common reason why engines fail to start up. A common reason for batteries to fail is drain. Your car`s battery typically expends a small portion of its storage to start your car up, and then recharges from your alternator as you move.
The fuel filter might be clogged. A clogged fuel filter is most commonly caused by leaving old fuel in the lawn mower. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the fuel filter and cause the engine to run roughly.

Oil is fine, runs fine for about 10 minutes then bogs down and dies. Let it sit for 10 minutes it will start again and run fine for another 10 minutes. Used to be 20 minutes, then 15. The cooler the weather the longer it runs. Is there some electrical component that may be getting weak? 17.5 hp Briggs. Air cooled. Air filters have been changed but didn’t help. Plug wire?About 5 yrs old. Help – It’s taking six hours to mow………..
ANSWER : It could easily be an electrical issue, or not. Get a spark tester (hooks up to the spark plug). Pep boys, Autozone, and Napa all sell them for less than $10. Check for spark when the mower has quit. If no spark, most likely need to replace the ignition module. Also check the flywheel key, if it is has been sheared or even knicked, the engine will run hot.If you still have spark when engine has failed, check the vent on the gas cap. A clogged vent will cause a vacuum to form in the tank and stall the engine.Good luck!

It should be damp, if it is wet, the engine has been flooded and should be left for a few minutes for the fuel to evaporate. Replace lead on the plug and hold the threaded part against the engine somehow. Make sure you don’t hold the lead in your hand!Pull start the engine and ensure there is a spark.
